Bummer for Gwaihir, the first Class 40 built in the United States
This Rodger Martin designed Class 40 ran aground in heavy fog off the South Coast of Fire Island, NY early this morning while on a delivery from Georgia to Newport, R.I. According to Newsday, three men, Stu Williams, 49 of White Fish, Mont.; John Bosco, 40, of Berlin, Conn.; and Jeremiah Bailey, 29, were aboard the boat when it went up on the beach and were rescued by the USCG and a rescue boat from NY’s Suffolk County, which took the men ashore. Sad news, let’s hope the boat can be recovered because she’s a beauty.
UPDATE!!! On June 2nd, shorthanded sailing stalwart Joe Cooper informs me that attempts are being made to salvage Gwaihir from the beach. More as the story develops.
