Fuel Leaking From A Commercial Airliner

OK, it seems like today has a certain military flavor, and here’s some good news to offset the sad news of the previous post. An Air Force sergeant was returning from Chicago to Japan after a leave when he spotted what looked like fuel leaking from that aircraft he was on. He should know, as he’s a boom operator on KC-135s, which refuel military aircraft in midair. After observing the leak for about an hour, he alerted the flight crew, who were wondering why they were losing 6,000 gallons of fuel an hour. The plane was diverted safely to San Francisco, and the sergeant was given a first-class seat on the next plane to Japan. Story here.
